October in Carrollton includes concerts, community events and Halloween celebrations

The Sounds on the Square music series returns from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, in Historic Downtown Carrollton, 1106 S. Broadway St.

Travis Carroll & The Toll Booths will perform a mix of original country-rock, traditional country, folk and jazz standards. Visitors can bring lawn chairs and are encouraged to visit Downtown Carrollton restaurants and shops before or after the performance.

City Council meeting

The Carrollton City Council will meet Tuesday, Oct. 13, at City Hall, 1945 E. Jackson Road. The work session begins at 5:45 p.m., followed by the regular meeting at 7 p.m. in the second-floor Council Chamber.

Council meetings typically take place on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. Minutes are posted after they are approved by the council.

Metrocrest Job Fair

Job seekers can meet local employers during the Metrocrest Job Fair from 3-5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at the Carrollton Public Library at Josey Ranch Lake.

Employers from multiple industries will be on hand to discuss job openings, and attendees may be able to apply for positions during the event. Job seekers are encouraged to dress professionally and bring copies of their resumes. The library will offer free resume printing the day of the event.

Registration is encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome.

CPR/AED training

Carrollton Fire Rescue will offer free CPR and automated external defibrillator training from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Carrollton Fire Administration building, 1111 W. Belt Line Road, Suite 100.

The class focuses primarily on compression-only CPR and AED use and also covers choking and child and infant CPR.

The training does not provide a nationally accredited course completion card, such as those issued through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross. For more information, call 972-466-9811.

Sounds on the Square

Sounds on the Square returns from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, in Historic Downtown Carrollton, 1106 S. Broadway St.

Aaron Brent, a musician, poet, writer and street performer, will perform. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and visit restaurants and shops surrounding the Downtown Square.

Halloween Hunt & Downtown Delights

Historic Downtown Carrollton will celebrate Halloween with Halloween Hunt & Downtown Delights from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24.

Visitors can trick-or-treat at downtown businesses and search for the 11 bronze Carrollton Critters sculptures as part of a weeklong scavenger hunt.

After sunset, the city will show the PG-rated 2003 film “The Haunted Mansion” on the Downtown Square. The outdoor screening is weather permitting.

Monster Mash

The Carrollton Police Officers Association will host its 15th annual Mother-Son Monster Mash from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at Creekview High School.

The event will include a kid-friendly haunted house, bounce house, dancing, games, snacks, door prizes, raffles and opportunities to meet SWAT team members and firefighters. Costumes are encouraged, and photos will be available for purchase.

The event is designed for mothers and sons.

Lunch & Chat with Carrollton Police Department

The Carrollton Police Department will host a free Lunch & Chat for residents ages 50 and older from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28.

Officers will provide public safety information, discuss current crime trends and offer tips to help residents reduce their risk of becoming crime victims.

Books for Treats

Children and adults can trade Halloween candy for a different kind of treat Saturday, Oct. 31, at Carrollton’s two public libraries.

Books for Treats will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Josey Ranch Lake Library and Hebron & Josey Library. Visitors of all ages can come in costume and choose a free book.

The Friends of the Carrollton Public Library sponsors the event.

Festival at the Switchyard seeks volunteers

Carrollton is seeking volunteers for the 16th annual Festival at the Switchyard on Saturday, Nov. 7.

Volunteers will help distribute programs, greet attendees, provide information, monitor rides and games and assist with children’s activities and crafts.

Individual volunteers must be at least 16. Youth ages 14-15 may volunteer as part of a school, church or Scout group with adult supervision.

Volunteers must work at least two hours and will receive a festival volunteer T-shirt, meal and access to nearby volunteer parking on a first-come, first-served basis.
