Legion grows chili cook off

American Legion 597 plans to expand their largest fundraiser: Their fourth annual chili cook off. 

The event raised more than $4,000 in 2023, but the organization would like to raise more than $6,000 this year. It will include a silent auction.

In addition to the the cook-off, the American Legion event will include a flag ceremony, chili tasting, silent auction and VIP judges, including Fox 4 Anchor Heather Hays, WFAA Reporter Jay Wallis and Mrs. North Texas International Jennifer Daly.

Funds will allow members to support veterans, military service members, their families and the community.

American has donated more than $20,000 to various veteran and community programs, including Boys and Girls State, Sweats for Vets, Thanksgiving soup kitchen, Christmas for Kids and Dallas Life homeless recovery center.

The American Legion Post 597 was chartered March 15, 1947, and was designated as the first “Purple Heart” post in the United States on March 12, 2018. The Legion includes members of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 597, Sons of the American Legion Squadron 597 and American Legion Riders Chapters 597. The Post prides itself on being a safe place for veterans, their families and the community to gather.
