Envision Dallas to mark White Cane Day with walk at Dallas Zoo

Posted

Envision Dallas, a Farmers Branch-based organization serving people who are blind or have low vision, will bring North Texans together for its 2026 White Cane Day Walk from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Dallas Zoo.

The event will raise awareness of the white cane as a symbol of independence while raising money for Envision programs serving children and adults who are blind or have low vision throughout North Texas.

White Cane Safety Day is observed nationally each October. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the first White Cane Safety Day proclamation in 1964, calling attention to the white cane and the independence and mobility it provides people who are blind.

Envision's White Cane Day Walk builds on that message with an evening centered on community, awareness, fundraising and action.

Money raised through the walk will support Envision's work in North Texas, including employment opportunities, outreach, rehabilitation, education and research.

Envision Dallas is based at 1801 Valley View Lane in Farmers Branch and provides services and programs for people who are blind or have low vision.

Programs offered through Envision Dallas include low vision occupational therapy, orientation and mobility training, assistive technology training and hands-on daily living skills training. Envision also operates an early childhood development center in Farmers Branch serving young children, including children who are blind or have low vision.

Employment is another part of Envision's work. Its Farmers Branch operation provides manufacturing, fulfillment and contact center jobs as part of the organization's efforts to expand employment opportunities for people with vision loss.

The Oct. 17 walk offers community members an opportunity to support those programs while learning more about the role the white cane plays in mobility, safety and independence.

The 2026 White Cane Day Walk will be held from 5-7 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Dallas Zoo, 650 S. R.L. Thornton Freeway in Dallas.

Participants can register, create a fundraising team or donate through the Envision White Cane Day Walk fundraising page. More information about Envision Dallas and its North Texas programs is available on the organization's website.
