School supply lists. New backpacks. Shoes that smell different, still stiff from the box. You haven't said a word about it, but the dog knows something is up.
Dogs don't know about first days of school. They don't know about supply lists or new teachers or which kid is nervous about the bus. All they know is that the people who have been home all summer, the ones who've been around for every walk and every nap and every "just checking the mail" trip to the door, are suddenly gone for hours. Gone at the same time every day. Gone with backpacks and shoes that smell like outside.
I know this one well, as a long time dog mom. The dogs who spent June and July sprawled out in the living room window, watching the whole neighborhood like it's their personal television, get quiet for a week or two once school starts. Some of them wait by the door longer than they used to. Some of them nap harder, like the day just takes more out of them now.
It's not sad, exactly. It's just an adjustment, the same kind we're all making. New routines, new schedules, everybody figuring out where they fit in the day again. If your dog seems a little clingier this week, a little more likely to follow you room to room like you might also disappear, that's just them catching up to the calendar.
Give it a couple weeks. They'll settle into the new rhythm same as the rest of us always do. Because they're dogs, and they love you no matter what.
Speaking of new routines: if back-to-school means your own schedule just got a lot fuller, and the yard is the first thing to slide, that's exactly what UrbanTail Cleanup is here for. One less thing on the list.
