More than 100 residents of all ages gathered at Farmers Branch Park on July 10 for a free Parks & Recreation Month pop-up picnic, kicking off a series of community events designed to encourage residents to explore the city's parks and recreation programs.

The lunchtime event featured free hot dogs, chips, cookies and water served under the park pavilion while supplies lasted. Seniors, families and neighbors spent the afternoon visiting and enjoying shade and a steady breeze at one of the city's signature parks.

The picnic was one of several free Parks & Recreation Month events planned throughout July. Although the city has scheduled activities for a variety of ages and interests, many residents may not be aware of them because they have received limited promotion.

Upcoming events include:

• Fit Together Friday: 10-10:45 a.m. Friday, July 17, at the Farmers Branch Recreation Center, 14050 Heartside Place. The free outdoor fitness class welcomes all ages and ability levels. Water, light snacks and small gift bags will be available while supplies last.

• Tadpole Triathlon: 8-10 a.m. Saturday, July 18, at the Frog Pond, 14032 Heartside Place. Children ages 3-10 can splash, bike and dash through a noncompetitive triathlon. Participants should bring their own bicycle or tricycle and will receive a medal.

• Wellness in the Park: 8-11 a.m. Friday, July 24, at Farmers Branch Historical Park, 2540 Farmers Branch Lane. The event includes yoga, Pilates, wellness vendors and outdoor fitness activities. Participants should bring a yoga mat. All ages are welcome.

• Summer Reading Finale: 12:30-2:30 p.m. Thursday, July 30, at the Frog Pond, 14032 Heartside Place. Children who participated in the Manske Library Summer Reading Program can receive free admission by showing proof of participation. Other guests who bring a library card will receive discounted admission.

July is recognized nationally as Parks & Recreation Month to celebrate the role parks, trails and recreation programs play in building healthy, connected communities.
