From saplings to shade

Annual Arbor Day event celebrates urban canopy

Posted

Though National Arbor Day is officially the last Friday of April, the Farmers Branch Parks and Recreation Department celebrated the holiday Nov. 8, in acknowledgement that autumn is a better time of year to plant trees in Texas.

The Parks and Recreation Board and Department held a ceremony at Gussie Field Watterworth Park, near City Hall, planting a tree, giving away saplings that residents had signed up for in October and providing other activities for residents.

Arbor Day was founded in the United States in 1872 in Nebraska City, Neb., and was first observed with the planting of more than one million tress in Nebraska.
