Dogs know where the party is

Posted

Anyone spending time outside with their dog this time of year, when it’s supposed to be fall but it still feels like the surface of the sun outside, notices the split personality of our lawns. Out in the open sun, the grass has gone crisp and brown, worn down by weeks of heat. But step into the shade of a live oak or the north side of a building, and it's still thick, green, and inviting.

Dogs know the difference too. Given the choice between scorched turf and cool, lush shade, they pick the shade every time, and that's usually where they do their business. It makes sense from a dog's perspective. From a cleanup perspective, it's exactly the wrong place for waste to end up, because shade is also where it hides best. Thick grass swallows a pile whole. A quick glance across a shaded lawn can look perfectly clean when it isn't.

This is the part of pet waste cleanup that's easy to underestimate. It's not really about picking up what you can see. It's about knowing where to look, and being disciplined enough to check the spots most people walk right past.

At UrbanTail, we handle this by working the shaded areas in tight, deliberate grids, covering a path about three feet wide at a time so nothing gets skipped between passes. Even with that method, a pile may be missed here and there. That’s why we follow up with a second walk-through using deodorizer, for freshness and also as a built-in double-check. If a customer spots something we missed, our field app has a "reclean" button that sends a technician back out fast, usually the same day.

So next time your dog beelines for the shade instead of the sun, don't worry, we already know that's where the party is.

If your yard's been hiding more than you’d like to admit, give UrbanTail a call and let us handle the shady spots.
