Residents are invited to learn about a new community initiative aimed at helping neighbors maintain their properties during a District 2 Town Hall hosted by City Council Member Tina Bennett-Burton.
The meeting is scheduled for 8-10 a.m. Saturday, July 11, in the City Council Chambers at Farmers Branch City Hall, 13000 William Dodson Parkway. The event is open to all residents.
The town hall will introduce the city's new Code Cares program, which is designed to help eligible residents address minor code-related property issues through volunteer assistance and community partnerships rather than relying solely on code enforcement alone.
According to city documents presented to the City Council this spring, the program was first proposed by the City Manager's Office in late 2023 but was delayed while the city focused on its Minor Home Repair Program, developed partnerships with community organizations and completed legal agreements needed for volunteers working on private property.
The program is intended to connect residents facing financial hardship, age-related challenges, disabilities or other extenuating circumstances with volunteers, nonprofit organizations, faith-based groups, local businesses and corporate sponsors that can assist with minor property maintenance. City staff will primarily serve as coordinators, connecting eligible residents with available community resources.
City officials describe Code Cares as a complement to, not a replacement for, traditional code enforcement. The goal is to encourage voluntary compliance through education, collaboration and assistance while helping preserve neighborhood quality and property values.
Organizers are seeking community volunteers, corporate sponsors, nonprofit and faith-based partners, and residents interested in learning more about the program and how they can become involved.
Bennett-Burton also plans to share information about other community initiatives in development. Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District (CFBISD) board member Carolyn Benavides is expected to attend to answer questions about the upcoming school year.
In promoting the event, Bennett-Burton encouraged residents to become involved, saying the initiative is intended to help "keep Farmers Branch beautiful one neighbor at a time."
