Applications for Place 2 City Council election open

Posted

On July 16, 2024, the Farmers Branch City Council formally accepted the resignation of Councilmember Martin Baird, District 2, and adopted an ordinance to call a Special Election to be held on Nov. 5, 2024 to fill Baird’s unexpired remaining term of office, which runs through May 2026.

Applications to be placed on the ballot for the special election have opened and can be picked up from City Secretary Stacy Henderson or downloaded from the city’s website.

While several applications have been picked up, only one has been filed as of Friday, July 26 by Tina Bennett-Burton, a former member of the council. Bennett-Burton served as District 3 Councilmember until May 2024. Due to redistricting, Bennett-Burton’s home now falls into District 2, making her eligible to be placed on the ballot.

Applications to be placed on the ballot must be filed in person with the city secretary. Interested candidates have through August 22 until 6 pm to file an application. The application includes minimum required verifiable signatures from within the District, including voter registration numbers, which can take several hours to verify once an application is filed.

If multiple candidates file, a drawing for the order of names on the ballot will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at 2 pm in the Council Chambers at City Hall. Branch Herald will also provide a candidate questionnaire to all candidates in August if there are multiple applications.
